In his Structural Semantics, Lithuanian semotician Algirdas Greimas developed several models of narrative structure which may potentially be of use in modeling character motivation and behavior in computational Interactive Storytelling systems. This talk will begin with an overview and brief history of various Interactive Storytelling research programs over the years, highlighting relevant aspects as they bear on the present topic. Greimas's models will then be introduced, followed by our proposed set of augmentations to those models which, we argue, may be of use in clarifying certain problems in designing motivation and behavior for game Non-Player Characters (NPCs).
